I wait in anticipation each May. For all the snow, the cold, the winter that wouldn't give up- the lilacs are actually right no time this year. Lilacs being my absolute favorite flower, this time of year when they put on their show, makes me very happy.
There are huge lilac bushes (taller than the house) of purple and white right outside our bedroom window. Their intoxicating scent drifts in day and night and whispers through my dreams.
When I step outside to pick them so I can fill just about every vase in our house (and that's a lot of vases), I can't help but put my nose right into a blossom and inhale their most heavenly scent.
What a glorious gift.
One vase down. Many more to go.
I'll have to try my hand at painting lilacs during my watercolor time, to add to the other flowers I've been painting like yesterday's 'creative cuppa' (it's what I call my 'paint with morning tea' projects on instagram).
Here's wishing you a perfectly wonderful day, but first..........now that you know my favorite flower, what's your?
Ciao for now,
PS- Did you know that if you pick one little bloom off a lilac, and suck it from the bottom you get the tiniest burst of sweetness?
Lilacs. My favorite flower. The fragrance has been filling the air here. G says it's intoxicating. I wholeheartedly agree.
When I came to look at our little cottage (Yes, I. Garrett was at work, and we ended up making an offer on this place without him even having seen it.........but that's another story altogether), one of the first things I noticed were the lilacs. Plenty of lilacs. The weren't in bloom, but I knew what they were right away.
Now, every year at this time we are treated to a most beautiful display, one which I gather up and bring indoors. To fill a house with bouquets of lilacs is surely something to relish. And we do.
I only wish you could smell them through the computer.
I wish you something just as sweet, filling your senses today.
Have a great Monday in your corner of the world, and I'll do the same.
At least the reconstruction of showers is for the birds. The shower reconstruction we've been amidst has been quite trying to say the least. Now we are experience enough to know that we should expect the worst when undertaking any home renovation. That said, this one has been a real doozy. Fought us hard every step of the way. Has been an exercise in patience and stress management. Gman has been a trooper.
In case you missed it, this all started because our shower, which was a built in that's been here since bought the place, began to leak. Yup. It leaked, right out of the bathroom and out under my kitchen and living room floor. Nice, huh?
So, first it was deconstruction only to reveal mold behind the shower. AH! Then a couple days of jack hammering to get rid of the concrete base. Of course, nothing would go easy and nothing would go back in easy. Being on a concrete slab makes plumbing very challenging. Thank goodness Garrett has not given up and now I have a nice shiny white brand spankin' new shower.
Can I get a halleluliah? He even installed pretty beadboard for me on the ceiling and the above the shower walls. There is still more to do, like finish of the nook to the side which will house shelves for towels. Have to make use of every inch of space in this house. Then he's got to finish off one wall of sheetrock that had to be replaced, put the trim up and repaint the whole darn thing. I mean, a happy new shower wouldn't be the same without a happy new paint job for the bathroom. Then we'll be styling and will moving onto floor replacement. But we won't go there yet.
The weather has been so wonderfully Spring like this week. The dog has been enjoying a lot of time outside. Of course, like any good mutt, he wants to go out and will then ask to come in a few minutes later only to ask to go out again. Good thing he's cute when he's doing the asking.
The birds have been flitting all about. Mr. Nuthatch was nice enough to turn himself right side up just for a brief second.
Have I told you my favorite flower is on its way? The lilacs are coming!
The lilacs are coming!
The temp is supposed to cool off for the weekend. If the wind holds off today, maybe we'll get a campfire in tonight. That sure would make me happy. We'll be watching the Bruins tomorrow night in their second play off game, so no campfires tomorrow night unless we get one in before the game. Those are our big plans, other than more progress on the bathroom. What about you?
Sunset Meadows
When I took this one I didn't think I'd really captured it. When I uploaded it to my computer I saw that I was wrong. The clouds almost look like mountains.
We had a few good ones this week including this one.
I'd love to watch it from the campfire tonight if all goes well.
Freeform Friday
This one is for my husband for all his hard work on the bathroom. He's in love with Diana Krall and not secretly I might add. Am I jealous? No. Not in the least. I have my list too. You know, the "If They Come Knocking At The Door, I Don't Care If I'm Married, I'm Letting 'Em In" list. So, here's Ms. Krall and Mr. Bennett, who I simply adore. Seriously smoooooooooth. Click here if you're reading via email.
I hope you have a great Friday and get to kick back or do something fun this weekend.
I confess. I did not take these pictures today. May Day here is looking, shall we say, 'not so pretty'. It's gray. It's cold. It's damp. It's downright raw and lashing rain. So I'm very glad I snapped these pictures on the weekend when we had some sun. They are a true celebration of Spring and the merry month of May.
I can't say for certain, but if I remember correctly this is some kind of flowering crabapple tree. That is not to say this tree gets any crabapples. It sure bursts into an amazing floral display though, each year about this time.
Made even more vibrant against the Spring grass and blue sky.
Each flower is perfectly wonderful.
I know this is out of focus, but I like this shot regardless. The burst of color and a peek of flowers in focus in the back against the sky.
What a lovely way to welcome May.
As I mentioned, our lilacs are out 4 weeks early. I am so glad I took the time to fill our house with vase after vase of my favorite flower yesterday. So glad I heard the weather forecast. Hopefully the rest survive the rain. On that note, I think I'll just keep looking at the flowers of this pretty tree and forget the rain outside.
Here's a few tidbits that will give you another glimpse into what makes me, me.
We have a few flower beds. They're not perfectly manicured, they usually have weeds, but they're still pretty. I like day lilies because they are lo maintenance and not real temperamental.
I mean really, who can argue with this?
I like to read and don't make enough time for it. Right now I am reading The Gerbil Farmer's Daughter, which is a true story, not what I expected, and quite funny. Laugh out loud funny.
I think I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'm a M*A*S*H freak. We watch it just about every night, multiple episodes. Hawkeye Pierce is my 'list'. You know the list you have that states, if these guys come to my door, I'm letting them in. And yes, I know he's not real. I'd let Alan Alda in too.Don't worry, Gar knows and he loves him as much as I do. Perhaps not quite the same way, but loves him none the less. "When people are laughing, they're generally not killing one another. ” ― Alan Alda......just one of the reasons I love him. Gar got me tickets to see him in Portsmouth a couple years ago when Mr. Alda was speaking on a book tour. He was exactly what I expected, charming, funny, handsome, smarmy, intelligent. Did I say I love that man? If you haven't read is book, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, we both highly recommend it.
I just bit the bullet and finally got a real cell phone. All I'd had until now was the occasional trac phone. I know, pretty sad for a communications professional, but I am an old fashioned girl to some extent. However, I am now firmly entrenched in this century with my new Samsung Droid Charge smartphone. Pretty cool.
Please note, I'm not smart enough to have figured everything out yet.
I've probably said this too, in fact just this week I think. Lilacs are my favorite flower. The lilacs on our property are one of the reasons we bought this house. Some of ours are HUGE. Taller than our house.
The barn is our next door neighbors. Nice view, huh? The honeysuckle is pretty too. But oh, the lilacs....................
Enough about me..............what about you?
Sun is shining, windy though so that is keeping it coolish. I've a mad day at my desk but I will get out to the field again at the end of the day for sure. I'll need that breath of fresh air and brain-recharge, no doubt.
