I Was Only Going To The Post Office

A Lesson In Woodcarving

I shot down to the post office this morning. On my way home, I stopped at the antique store down the street. It can be dangerous having antique stores 1 mile from your home, know what I mean?  It's a group shop and pop in to see discover.

Today, this sweet wood carving.

When I got up to the counter the woman turned her over and said, "Oh she's from Oberammergau."

I said, "I saw that but I don't know Oberammergau."

She told me, it is a village in Germany (Bavaria) that is known for it's wood carving. She'd actually visited there.

So, now I now where this sweet little lady is from.

The funny thing is, she seems to have on wooden shoes, as if she is Dutch.

She looks to have been painted, but I think it makes her lovely carvings stand out even more.

The things you learn on a trip to the post office.

Have  a great day.

Ciao for now,

  1. Love your little lady. Oberammergau is a city in Germany where a passion play has been presented every year since the 1600s. (Just a little something I remembered from high school German class)

    1. Yes! Passion play every 10 years....that's it! and apparently the village strees are lined with little wood carving shops.

that's good that you remembered that one.

  2. Beautiful little wood carving. I like the paint on it as well, gives the carvings depth.
LOL, nothing much interesting on the way to our tiny, closet-sized, rural Post Office....just cows and forest ;)

    1. well, open space on the way to ours, but no cows that way. 2 minutes past it, plenty of cows, but I don't go that far.

  3. I love it! I have heard of that place - I think they still do a lot of carving there - nativity scenes and so on.

    1. I just love learning things like that. Now, changes are, I would have turned her over again when I got home and investigated (being the way I am), but so much better hearing it straight from the mouth of someone who had been there. an it wasn't even from her booth.

  5. I LOVE her! I live that she is painted white but that some of the wood is peaking through! Great find!
