A Wintry Day

Bitter Sunday

It's still frigid here. A tiny bit warmer than the end of last week, when the wind is whipping.

That was not the case when I woke up at 6 this mornig. By 6:30 I was outside all bundled up taking pictures of the moon. I think I needed a tripod because it was too cold to keep the camera still.

This month's moon, according to the The Farmers' Almanac is The Wolf Moon.

See why I braved the cold? It was big and bright orange going down over the meadows.

Inspired by the cold I went searching for a Winter's poem.  I happened upon one by Robert Burns almost immediately.  And since my friend Cari-Jane at Hybrid Handmade, the Scottish lass and Glaswegian that she is, blogged yesterday and mentioned it was Burns Night, it seemed quite appropriate.

Winter: A Dirge

The wintry west extends his blast,
And hail and rain does blaw;
Or the stormy north sends driving forth
The blinding sleet and snaw:
While, tumbling brown, the burn comes down,
And roars frae bank to brae;
And bird and beast in covert rest,
And pass the heartless day.

“The sweeping blast, the sky o’ercast,”
The joyless winter day
Let others fear, to me more dear
Than all the pride of May:
The tempest’s howl, it soothes my soul,
My griefs it seems to join;
The leafless trees my fancy please,
Their fate resembles mine!

Thou Power Supreme, whose mighty scheme
These woes of mine fulfil,
Here firm I rest; they must be best,
Because they are Thy will!
Then all I want—O do Thou grant
This one request of mine!—
Since to enjoy Thou dost deny,
Assist me to resign.

Our weekend has been fairly quiet. We did go on a quest for saffron yesterday, so I could make my first paella. I am not sure why it too me until now to try making paella, because all I can say is that it is now a favorite dish.  I'll be sharing the recipe this week. Layers and layers of the most divine flavors.

Today the mission is to put a bunch of stuff up into the attic.  Oh, and stay warm. Which of course starts and ends with the wood stove.

A fellow etsian, Tom from Toosha, knits wonderful sweaters and such....

......posted a video on facebook today by Nouvelle Vague. It's a first for me and I think it's quite lovely. I'm so glad he shared it. (click here if you're reading via email)

By the way, once again it is a party that won't end. People still coming through the door, chatting it up, showing off all their stuff. If you haven't checked it out, do. And if you have a shop or a blog, you are more than welcome to link up.

Have a great Sunday.

Ciao for now,

    1. that would not be 'typical' of me to be up and at it, camera in hand at 6:30. i just couldn't get back to sleep and once I stood up and saw the moon out the bedroom window...I just had to. The moon is something!
